It is a high-quality rare sturgeon of the highest economic value in existence scattered through the Heilong River, the Wusuli River and the Songhua River in China. The favorable temperature for farming Amur River Sturgeon is about 1~26℃, between that for warm and cold water fishes. The largest fish can be as heavy as over 100kg.
The fish has a long and spindle-shaped body with no scale and 5 rows of diamond-shaped bone lamella on the back. The larvae are chondrosteus of bone lamellas with spikes. The color of the back is brown or grey while it is black and grey for the larva with white belly for all fishes. The Amur River Sturgeons have such features as large body, long life, high survival rate of larva and fast growth speed. They are proper for both appreciation and consumption and can normally ingest and grow in any fish pond or other artificial aquatic environment.
The natural Amur River Sturgeon has a sexual maturity of 11~13 years while it is 7~8 years for the farmed ones.
