Widely known as the "huso", Kaluga is a Cartilaginous fish which can be traced back to the cretaceous era 130 million years from now. It is a rare and precious fish only exists in the river basin of the Heilong River. It is also one of the largest fresh water fishes in the world that can grow as long as 5.6m and as heavy as 1000kg. The fishes mainly scatter through the Heilong River and lakes related to the river's large branches, especially in the middle stream of the river. They can also be found in the downstream of the Wusuli River, Songhua River and occasionally the Nen River. The fish can live for 50 years at the most and has a sexual maturity of 12~16 years.
Kaluga has the largest body among all fresh water fishes. The mouth lies to the venter of the head with a half-moon shape. It has two pairs of tentacles in front of its mouth and venter with the pair in the middle facing the front. It has sharp lips which are triangle-shaped. The left and right gill membranes are connected to each other, which is a quite distinct feature to tell the difference between the sturgeons and husos. There are two types including the long-lips and the short-lips.
Kaluga is a large carnivore fresh water fish of vicious temper. The larva mainly feeds on the benthic invertebrates, the crustaceans and small fishes, shrimps or insect larvas.
